Substitutes:

1
Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

1 / 2

High XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
RNG
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

[FR] Je n'avais ni le [Crâne Fantomatique], ni le [Jeune maccarbre] alors j'ai utilisé ma [Minuscule apparition] à la place et j'ai fini le combat avec son [Entaille de l'ombre]. :)

I did it with the strategy deligned there but with the Unborn Val'kyr (1,2,1) as third pet,
using:
- Curse of Doom
- Shadow Slash until Beaky is dead.

Khes

wrote on 2018-04-02 06:26:05

didn't have a blight hawk, son of seethe finished off the team very nicely. didn't need ghostly skull

EDIT: seethe is apparently not the best choice, did the daily on a couple more toons to experiment and seeth barely made it past roots both times. ghostly skull still finished off as per the guide. i'd be surprised if pretty much any decent undead doesn't make a good replacement for blighthawk if you don't have it.

Allera wrote on 2018-02-13 22:01:39

I've done it easy with:
Bone Serpent (2-2-1), Spirit Crab (2-1-1) and Fragment of Desire (1-2-1)

1. Consume
2. Call Darkness
3. Nocturnal Strike
... keep every Spell on Cooldown, Pass if any on CD until your Bone Serpent dies.
Bring in your Spirit Crab
1. Shell Shield
2+ Surge until your Spirit Crab dies
Bring in your Fragment of Desire
! Soul Ward to defense Beakys Lift-Off
1+ Spiritfire Bolt until Beaky is dead.

PlavaLaguna wrote on 2017-12-23 10:37:39

Unborn valk (2, 2, 2)
Spirit crab (2, 1, 1)
Soulbroken whelpling (1, 2, 2)

Unborn valk
1. Curse of doom
2. Unholy ascension
Spirit crab
3. Shell Shield
4. Surge (until the crab completely dies, if you get stunned by Roots, pass and continue surge)
Soulbroken whelpling
5. Arcane storm
6. When Beaky enters use Amplify magic (on Beaky's first move - Lift Off)
7. Spiritfire bolt until Beaky dies

Got it on the first try, also got one crit on Roots.

I didn't have much success with this script. I've had more consistent success with this script that aligns a bit closer to the posted strategy:

ability(Plagued Blood) [enemy.round=1 & enemy(#2).active]
ability(Call Darkness) [enemy.round=2]
ability(Lift-Off) [!self.aura(Undead).exists]
ability(Ghostly Bite) [enemy.hp<618 & !enemy.ability(Lift-Off).usable]
ability(Ghostly Bite) [self.aura(Undead).exists & !enemy.ability(Lift-Off).usable]
ability(#1)
standby
change(next)

Granted, if I were writing this guide, I'd probably omit the second Call Darkness on Roots to eliminate RNG issues with your Blighthawk's Lift-Off failing to connect (by adding an "& enemy(#1).active" to that conditional).

wrote on 2017-10-31 15:41:00

I also didn't have a levelled up Blighthawk so I used Drudge Ghoul (1,1,2). There seems to be many substitutes if you don't have a Blighthawk :)

Iamyourmage wrote on 2017-03-14 11:21:19

Won easily with Bone Serpent (1,2,1), BlightHawk (2,2,1), Fragment of anger (1,1,1)

Rawrr wrote on 2017-06-25 18:32:51

This was an awesome strat. Should be included up top. Won easily, even when enemy proc'd. Thank you!

Anonymous wrote on 2017-08-24 14:16:01

Blighthawk was no real benefit other than padding, but other pets worked a treat

Anonymous wrote on 2017-08-24 14:10:52

Doesn't work, due to blindness issues. proper RNG!

MolsonofAle wrote on 2017-08-12 14:17:53

Didn't have a leveled Blighthawk used Fragment of Desire instead.
Used Whelpling as stated above
Fragment of Desire 1,1,1. Soulrush finished off Roots.
Shield when Beaky came out then Bolt until Soulrush CD.
Had Skull in 3rd slot but didn't need it.

Eekwibble wrote on 2017-08-12 10:57:45

Thought I'd try something a bit different and found a great 2-pet + leveller combo for this.

Blightbreath 2-1-1
Levelling pet (not mech or aquatic) with >642hp (about lvl10 should be fine, I had no probs with a lvl13)
Widget the Departed 1-2-2

Turn 1. (B/B and H/S) Sleeping Gas, (H/P) Acid Rain. If Sunny falls asleep here, reset.
2. (B/B and H/S) Acid Rain, (H/P) Sleeping Gas
3+. Alternate between Sleeping Gas and Slime and use Acid Rain again on its 1st cd. If Sunny falls asleep at any point, just carry on the rotation against Roots and use Widget to finish them both off when Blightbreath dies. If it doesn't fall asleep, make sure you kill it with Slime rather than Sleeping Gas, it will make Roots a 3-shot fight (more if using H/S breed or you miss, if that happens and Roots kills Blightbreath, finish it with Widget's Pounce).

Against Beaky:
Bring in your levelling pet to soak Lift-Off. Use with any basic attack on turn 2 of Lift-Off to bring Beaky to <1201hp. One strike should be enough to get Beaky to 1200hp or below but it's worth noting that his next attack, Rush, only deals 210 Beast damage so you may be able to fit in another attack if it wasn't.
Swap to Widget.
1. Call Darkness (this will take Beaky under 50%hp and remove the Flying buff)
2. Spectral Strike
Beaky dies.

Star wrote on 2017-02-04 03:08:52

I did the whelping part but I used bone serpent (1, 2, 1) and Widget the Departed (1, 2, 2) instead. When whelping died, Darkness was still up so I used the bone serpent's Nocturnal Strike to finish off Poisoned Branch quickly. Then with Beaky I used the bone serpent's call darkness to recast it. switched to Widget, prowl and spectral strike and you're done.

I used a similar method, with Scourged Whelpling, then Bone Serpent and Frostwolf Ghostpup, using Sneak Attack and Ghostly Bite at the end. Worked well.

This strategy must be a really HEAVY RNG dependent one, because I lost both of my pets and his 2nd pet still had around 400-600 HP. I will try it again, but not sure if this is that good.

EDIT: 2nd time was the charm, so this is definitely a RNG fight.

David G wrote on 2017-01-17 01:07:48

Another change option for the Blighthawk is to avoid Ghostly Bite in the middle slot and set it up (1,1,1) with Consume Corpse in the middle instead. That way, you can use it when you're 50% health or lower for a significant boost to it's health.

Anonymous wrote on 2017-05-11 16:08:43

Great hint! I used consume corpse after Beaky's liftoff and I didn't need my 3rd pet.

I followed this strat but didnt have a blighthawk, so i used Mr. Bigglesworth (1,1,1). and used ice wall inplace of the first lift off, the second one killed my cat but i was still able to finish the fight with the skull (despite missing the ghostly bite bc of his lift off)

Eder wrote on 2017-03-03 17:14:09

This doesnt work for me, either im always first or Sunny Crit with over 800+ or I keep missing
He kill my Whelpling before I kill hin :(

Tamer wrote on 2017-01-17 05:54:43

Unborn Valkyr 2-2-2, Scourged Whelpling 2-1-1, Widget the departed 1-2-1. Can't really remember how but Widget had half it's health in the end when I won the match.

Geki wrote on 2016-12-03 12:46:30

One thing I noted with my fight. If you have a P/S whelpling your speed will be exactly the same as Sunny's. Even if RNG makes you go second in a round tail sweep still won't do its full damage. I might suggest using breath instead.

Bix wrote on 2016-12-27 08:06:26

Good remark. I was also wondering why the little arrow indicating who's first wasn't showing. Clearly, in this situation, use Shadowflame in first slot for Scourged Whelpling. Also, think about using Blighthawk's Ghostly bite on his undead rez turn.

Agnok wrote on 2016-12-18 11:13:32

I didn't have a Blighthawk so I used Son of Sethe instead. It worked reasonably well.

Evil wrote on 2016-11-03 18:08:05

Bone Serpent 1/2/1 (pref P/S but S/S also works) Fragment of Desire 1/2/1 leveling pet with around 150 HP

Bone Barrage -> Call Darkness -> Bone Barrage -> Nocturnal Strike- 1st enemy is dead
Bone Barrage 2nd enemy pet.

switch to level 1

switch back- your Serpent will probably die

Bring Fragment of Desire

(NOW ITS BIT RNG)

Soulrush- if u will be lucky with stun -> 3rd enemy comes -> Spiritfire Bolt then Soul ward to Block Lift-Off, adjust Spiritfire Bolt and Soulrush depends of enemy Health, and follow same strat vs last guy.

If you wont stun 2nd enemy, just follow priority Soulrush > Spiritfire Bolt and when Bird comes -> Soul ward to Block Lift-Off

PS: didnt have time to test many variations, cause Soulrush stunned 2nd enemy and i just won on 1st try ^^ but without lucky stun this tactic should work anyway)

Thanks, works fine.

Enzzo wrote on 2016-12-03 10:24:06

Slight edit to this strat. When Blighthawk gets killed and rezzes for one turn, use Ghostly Bite (more damage than Infected Claw)

Sopherra wrote on 2016-12-02 23:42:56

I used Unborn Val'kyr with 2/2/2. Pass when Beaky comes in because he lifts off. Curse of Doom. Use Unholy Ascension during the resurrect round, and continue with the above strategy.

Ectothrix wrote on 2016-10-24 01:32:56

Replaced Blighthawk with Son of Sethe 1/2/1 and just owned Roots, before that i lost every time due to stuns and missing. I also didnt do the 2nd Darkness with first pet.

Jen wrote on 2016-11-13 23:59:37

I didn't have much luck with Blighthawk either, I saw a previous comment mentioning using Blighthawk to replace the Marionette so thought I'd try that. He actually killed Roots vs Blighthawk who didn't manage it. I didn't have a Son levelled to try.

buttons wrote on 2016-11-13 07:35:47

oops put a magic comp under undead sorry

Sweetmana wrote on 2016-10-24 00:59:27

Fragment of Anger 1/1/1 works really well as the second pet here.

FlibbitSC wrote on 2016-10-23 13:35:35

Marionette is still in the Rematch string =)

Check again please. The strings are generated directly from the pets in the slots, and the IDs are taken from Blizzards database directly. Should not be possible, perhaps you have a team with the same name already and it didn't overwrite it when importing?

Tyrsa wrote on 2016-10-23 13:05:28

Don't have a marionette or a leveled blighthawk.
Fragment of Suffering (2,1,1) for second pet worked a charm, and I didn't use the skull at all.

Quantumleapr wrote on 2016-10-23 06:07:51

Used Blighthawk instead of Macabre Marionette, worked just as well.

Aranesh

wrote on 2016-10-23 09:48:06

Works great and removes the Marionette from my roster, which is something I wanted to do anyway. Thank you!

Isiliel wrote on 2016-10-23 06:16:04

Replaced the Marionette by a Blighted Squirrel (212) and went for Woodchipper with Stampede. Was close enough in the end, but worked out on first try :)

Melandroso wrote on 2016-10-23 04:53:50

Worked well. Had to add a Bone Bite after Dead Man's Party to kill Roots and for Beaky, I did not have a chance to use Dead Man's party until the undead round, but Beaky died to the Ghostly Bite on the Shattered Defenses, so an efficient win :)
